It was called "Straylin Street," a slow strummer that started out "When I was younger, I was torn and frayed and lonely." He was 19 when he wrote it. One day Droge came into Piecora's with a song he'd written during a phase of read ing Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" and "The Subterraneans" and dreaming of hopping freights and the hobo ramble. A kitchen team, they specialized in smoke breaks, playing guitars and talking of making it big enough to quit slinging dough. Back in '89 or '90, the two had worked together at Piecora's Pizza in Seattle. "I might have to do that to remember the moment."Īccompanying Droge on guitar two years ago was Mike McCready, who now plays lead for Pearl Jam. He now returns to Shoreline to join H.O.R.D.E. Since that date he's toured continuously in support of his two releases: 1994's "Necktie Second" and the recent "Find a Door." A clever lyricist with a voice that roams from bright and eager to old and haggard, Droge has opened for Tom Petty and Melissa Etheridge, done the European festivals, had songs in three movies and been on Dave Letterman's show twice. I was about 10,000 times more nervous than he was, and after we'd both spit in this garbage can he just kind of smiled at me and said, 'Road gravel.' " "He's sucking on lemons and spitting into this garbage pail. Live From Nowhere Near You, Vol."He was wearing a hat and sunglasses and a denim shirt and I was wearing a hat and sunglasses and a denim shirt and I thought, 'Oh my God, I'm dressed like Neil Young,' " he says.
